Financial Education Resources

posted August 26, 2020 in Blogs

If you’re similar to the majority of the general population, you probably didn’t learn how to do your taxes, build good credit or obtain a loan while in school — at least not as intentionally as you were told to study algebra. This is a common theme amongst all people, but especially those just coming into adulthood in a world where options and opinions are everywhere they look.

Although it’s been made easy to stop in any financial institution and open a basic checking account, making decisions to lead you to a sound financial future is harder than 300+ level college coursework for most. Financial literacy is vital for people of all ages, particularly the younger generation who are very impressionable and are often times left to figure it all out on their own.

Fortunately, there are many resources out there from books, podcasts, online forums, advice from family and friends and even learning from those who work where you choose to have your finances stored. However, with so many resources, it’s hard to know where to start or what information to trust.

Here at Greater Iowa, we have always made it a priority to weave financial literacy into our daily services, as well as into many of our GICU programs, such as our Land-a-Grand Scholarship Program, GICU Ball Kids, Project Classroom, etc. Through these programs and living out our mission, “To better the financial well-being of our members and the communities we serve", we are able to enhance the level of comfort our members feel regarding the products and services we offer.

Recently, we had a new member stop in our Southgate branch to join our credit union who was in her mid-twenties. She told us she had been wanting to open an account for some time, but was intimidated to do so because of the stigma that financial institutions are rigid, cold and hard to understand. Upon leaving her appointment with us, she expressed her gratitude and thanked our staff for being so personable, understanding and easy to communicate with. This is just one of the many examples of stories we hear on a daily basis. We’re here to help. We truly are #peoplehelpingpeople. Our goal is to help break down the barriers between your current financial situation and your future. Whether you are on a path of success already, going through a hard time or are looking to expand your knowledge of the industry; we will take the time to ensure you are 100% comfortable with the direction you’re headed and will offer advice along the way.

While this level of service is part of our daily work, we also realize that not all of our members have the ability to meet with us on a regular basis. This is why we also have several online resources that are of no cost to our members!
